The Kidney Foundation Walk will be in May or June 2005 and we need your help! Put together a team of walkers and raise money for health, research and education of Kidney Disease and transplant patients!

Here is some important information:

The Kidney Foundation's mission is to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

  • Chronic kidney disease develops when the kidneys permanently lose most of their ability to remove waste and maintain fluid and chemical balances in the body. This process can develop rapidly—within 2 to 3 months—or slowly, over 30 to 40 years.

  • In chronic kidney disease, the kidneys have not stopped working altogether but are not working as well as they should.  Dialysis or kidney transplantation is required when kidney function drops to about 15% of normal.

  • Another type of kidney disease is acute renal failure. It occurs when the kidneys suddenly stop working. It is usually caused by an event that leads to rapid kidney malfunction, such as dehydration, blood loss from major surgery or injury, or the use of certain medications.

  • Diabetes, the leading cause of chronic kidney disease. Also, high blood pressure, is the second leading cause of chronic kidney disease. Staying at a normal weight and getting enough exercise is very important for these groups to help prevent diabetes and high blood pressure.
